This section assumes you have a diagnosis in mind and are ready to start treatment. The biggest catch with treatment is that the diagnosis isn't always certain.
I am surprised how often people treat the wrong thing — getting the wrong diagnosis is common.
The most common mistake I see is blaming allergies for too much. Allergies are real and very common, but many people who actually have a sudden infection, a long-lasting infection, an irritated nose lining, or an issue with the shape of their nose have been treating themselves for allergies instead.
The other common mix-up is when symptoms come on suddenly. People often look first for a weather change, allergies, a bacterial infection, or smells in the air, but the most likely cause of a sudden flare-up is actually a virus (a cold).
If things aren't getting better on your own, it's probably time to see a doctor.
